Dividing The Marital Estate
In a divorce, there are a number of financial issues that need to be resolved before parties move forward.
I am attorney Susan Rossi Cook, and I have helped people in Needham, Massachusetts, and the surrounding area divide marital property fairly and effectively for more than 15years. I assist my clients with financial issues like child support, alimony and property division.
After a divorce or separation, both parents are responsible for the emotional and financial support of their children. In 2013, the state of Massachusetts put into place new guidelines for child support calculations. These guidelines reflect the evolving nature of families in the state, providing more guidance for nontraditional parenting plans.
I stay up-to-date on relevant changes to family law in order to help clients negotiate or litigate matters of child support.
Alimony, which is also called spousal support or spousal maintenance, is often one of the most hard-fought issues during a divorce. I help clients work toward fair, sustainable alimony arrangements that are in accordance with Massachusetts’ recently changed alimony laws.
Marital Property Division
While dividing certain assets can be straightforward, the process becomes more complicated when the assets were acquired during the marriage, or if property that an individual owned before marriage has been modified or shared.
I have helped divorcing couples distribute a variety of assets, including:
- Real estate property, including the marital home
- Personal property
- Pension funds
- Retirement funds
- IRA and 401(k) plans
- Bank accounts
- Family business assets
Financial issues in divorce can get complex and overwhelming, so it is important to work with a divorce lawyer who is experienced in such matters. To arrange an initial consultation and learn more about your options for property division, I encourage you to contact me at 508-507-8742.
