Regardless of the circumstances, divorce can be stressful for both parties and for families. Fortunately, there are options out there that can help mitigate the negative emotional impact of divorce on families and can also help them save time and money in the process. Not every concern that arises during the divorce process necessarily has to be litigated. There are other methods of resolving differences and one such option for couples to consider is divorce mediation.

Mediation involves a neutral mediator who helps the divorcing couple negotiate and resolve all their divorce-related issues. The couple is able to research and select a mediator that they think is best for them and to help them resolve their divorce concerns. Divorce-related issues a mediator can help the couple negotiate and resolve include property division, alimony, child support and child custody concerns. It is important that fairness is maintained and that the best interests of the child are served by any child custody agreement.

The cost of mediation will vary by the number of divorce-related issues the couple has to resolve, how complex those issues are and how contentious they are. In general, however, divorce mediation is commonly a more cost efficient method of resolving a divorce because it takes less time which results in fewer expenses to the divorcing couple. Divorce-related issues that may be more complex can include the buyout of a marital home, custody disputes, retirement plan division and transfers or dividing a family business or trust assets. In some circumstances, experts such as financial experts, tax professionals, appraisers and others may be needed to help the couple reach a divorce settlement agreement.

Divorce can take time and money and wear on the emotions of the divorcing couple which is why they should consider all the options available to them. By considering options that can save time, money and acrimony, divorcing couples may find a smoother and simpler divorce process awaits.
