Marriages that endure for at least a decade are common for Massachusetts residents, but, in Hollywood, marriages that last into their double digits are practically unheard of. As such, it is always surprising to hear that a long-time married celebrity and their partner have decided to end their legal union. Just recently, actor Ewan McGregor filed for divorce from his wife of almost 22 years.
McGregor has made a name for himself in some of Hollywood’s biggest films, but the Scottish actor got his start more than two decades ago on a British television program. It was on that program that he met his wife, who served as a production designer.
The couple eventually married and now McGregor and his wife share children. McGregor based his divorce filing on the existence of irreconcilable differences between he and his wife.
Depending upon the jurisdiction in which McGregor chose to file, fault may or may not play a role in the many nuanced aspects of his divorce. He has requested joint custody of his children to be shared with his soon-to-be ex-spouse, but it is reported that his wife would prefer sole custody of their children, with McGregor allowed visitation time.
In the end, McGregor’s divorce from his wife ends a long-term marriage both by Hollywood standards and that of everyday people. He and his wife will have to work through financial and emotional matters that could put strain on themselves and their kids.
